Turkish food delivery service Getir is leaving Italy, Portugal and Spain to focus on its core markets: Turkey, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and – contrary to earlier rumours – the Netherlands.
Loss-making
Getir had already left France and had also announced the end of its operations in Spain earlier this month. Now the quick commerce player confirms that the story is also coming to an end in Italy and Portugal. Rumours as if the company would also leave the Netherlands are denied: operations in the American, British, Dutch, German and Turkish markets – that together account for 96 % of sales anyway – are set to continue.
The Turkish company, famous for acquiring Gorillas late last year, is heavily loss-making and has been looking for fresh capital for some time. That is now said to have been found: CEO Nazim Salur says he is finalising a capital round. Quick commerce experienced strong growth during the pandemic, but then saw a sharp downturn. The business model struggled with high structural costs and also regulations: many cities ban dark stores from residential areas.
