European soda can sales have grown 2 % in 2015, which results in 64 billion beer and soda cans in total. Compared to the year before, 1.25 billion additional soda cans were sold.
Decent growth for energy drinks
Soda in a can did very well in 2015, with European volumes up 4.4 %. More than half of European cans are soda-based, with particularly Eastern Europe sales up 10 %.
Energy drinks are a major factor in that growth, as they are sold in cans more often, in increasingly larger sizes. The energy drink market grew 6 %, with nearly two thirds of energy drinks sold in cans.
Western European canned beer sales also grew, while Eastern European canned beer sales dropped slightly.
“Despite the lack of a major sporting event, the canned drinks market performed well again. The number show that the can is very popular, both with the consumer and the brand owner. There is also a wider range of possible cans, which helps brands to differentiate their product range”, BCME Benelux’ chairman Matthijs Jansen said.
