Belgian consumers are buying more and more certified sustainable seafood, with new records for tuna and mussels. The MSC label is helping shoppers choose, but there is room for improved communication.
Increased availability
Despite continuing geopolitical and economic challenges, Belgian consumers, retailers and suppliers remain committed to certified sustainable fishing and supporting the MSC programme. This is reflected in the first Belgian MSC ‘State of the Shelf’ report, which highlights progress in the Belgian seafood industry and the availability of MSC-certified seafood.
The MSC label is a global standard for sustainable fishing, with seafood certified by independent auditors. This label guarantees that fish have been caught in an ecologically responsible way, with attention to maintaining healthy fish stocks, minimising ecological impact, and ensuring traceability.
Rising consumption
Consumers in Belgium spent a record 203,500,000 euros on MSC-certified seafood in 2023, up 3.3 % on the previous year.
