In Denver and Phoenix, Walmart will run a pilot program, using two alternative taxi companies (Uber and Lyft) to deliver groceries to customers. It will launch the service later this month.
Compete with Amazon
Customers can just place online orders with Walmart and the company will request an Uber or Lyft driver to deliver the groceries at home. The service will cost between 7 and 10 dollars (6 to 9 euro).
“We will start small and let our customers guide us, but testing new things like last-mile delivery allow us to better evaluate the various ways we can best serve our customers”, Walmart Global eCommerce COO, Michael Bender, told Wall Street Journal.
Walmart’s new service is another step in the fight against Amazon, whose Amazon Fresh service has nibbled away at Walmart’s market share over the past few years. Over the past two years, Walmart invested about 2 billion dollars (1.8 billion euro) to boost its online sales. At first, it focused on expanding its click & collect service at its stores, but now, it has added an increasing number of services to quickly deliver groceries at home, which means it is in direct competition with Amazon now.
