Belgians are increasingly eating out at restaurants, but do opt for cheaper and quicker bites. Home delivery and meal boxes are on decline, according to new market research.
Eating out once a week…
Has the Covid pandemic permanently changed the way people eat? Have new habits stuck? Less than expected, according to research by Sirius Insight. In 2023, home delivery dropped significantly in all three regions of the country. Only 10% of Belgian households ordered weekly. The decline was particularly pronounced in Flanders (from 15% to 10%) and in Brussels (from 35% to less than 25%).
Also, only 22% of households ordered a meal box at least once in 2023, compared to 29% the year before. According to Sirius Insight, this can be explained by the still limited offer, but also because Belgians are going out to restaurants more again. In 2023, 31% of households went to a restaurant at least once a month, and 27% of Brussels residents even once a week.
