Barry Callebaut has opened a new logistics centre in Lokeren (between Antwerp and Ghent) in Belgium. ‘The Chocolate Box’ is the world’s biggest chocolate warehouse – and the most sustainable one.
100 million euros
The new warehouse is Barry Callebaut’s biggest ever investment in its operational network, carrying a price tag of 100 million euros. Located close to a highway and railway between Antwerp and France, and to the Port of Antwerp, the new distribution centre should enable the chocolate maker to deliver its goods to customers around the world even faster.
The works on the 60,000 sqm building have lasted for two years, and included a fully automated high bay of 41 m in height, which can store 125,000 pallets in a constant temperature of 18 °C. Moreover, the warehouse has achieved the highest possible sustainability score for logistical buildings, being awarded the BREEAM Outstanding certificate.
