Low-carbon policy needed
“We feel we carry the responsibility to be an active part in the worldwide attempts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and to take charge of the transition towards a low-carbon, climate-proof economy”, the CEOs write. Exki, Nike, Nestlé, Unilever, Ikea, Delhaize and Alpro have all signed the statement, while Solvay, Eneco, Bpost and others have also backed the letter.
Their goal is to limit the rise in temperatures to a maximum of 2 degrees by 2100. These companies have already joined forces in the Belgian sustainability network, The Shift, but now they seek a collaboration with the Belgian governments to create actual plans. Once those have been put in place, this could convince other countries and companies that a progressive climate policy is possible.
The CEOs also feel the Paris treaty should emphasize that the worldwide economy should move towards a carbon-poor policy as quickly as possible and that renewable energy should become a priority.
