Martin’s may be Richmond’s market leader, Delhaize is also present in the area with 45 Food Lion stores. The store closures may cost 357 people their job, but they will be allowed to present themselves for a job in one of the other stores in the region.
Martin’s denies the closures have anything to do with the impending Ahold – Delhaize merger. Spokesperson Samantha Krepps says it has all to do with expiring leases, which meant the company will shut down the affected supermarkets. No other reasons were considered, she said.
