“Law should apply to everyone”
The European Commission had gone to the Court of Justice of the European Communities to tackle the Belgian market practices law as it felt Belgium was too strict when it checked for announced price drops. Belgium is also stricter in its door-to-door sales, as it only allows 250 euro per customer.
The fact that Belgium does not allow medicine, medical appliances, glasses and frames to be sold door-to-door or on marketplaces, conflicts with European rules according to the European Commission. The market practice law also does not apply to professions, dentists and physiotherapists – which the European Commission does not accept.
The Court of Justice of the European Communities agreed with the European Commission and has tasked the Belgian government to adapt its market practice law as soon as possible.
