Carrefour has signed a partnership with Nigerian e-commerce player Jumia to sell its product ranges online in four African countries: Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Senegal.
Fresh food not included
The cooperation between Carrefour and Jumia ensures that the French supermarket group can now offer e-commerce in Africa, while for Jumia it means a new expansion of the offer on its marketplace. The partnership will initially focus on the four markets where both companies are active. Through Jumia’s platform, Carrefour products will be delivered country-wide, and customers will benefit from free returns within seven days including various payment options (cash on delivery, mobile money or credit cards). The offer will not include fresh food.
The agreement will give the supermarket group better access to African customers, according to director of international cooperation Patrick Lasfargues: “Carrefour and its partners have a multi-channel strategy that draws on the best local e-commerce players. Since Jumia has managed to democratise e-commerce in Africa and its customer base is expanding, it is an obvious partner for our development on the continent.”
Jumia, the leading pan-African e-commerce platform, is currently active in fourteen countries. In addition to its own marketplace, the platform also has a logistics department, for the fulfilment and delivery of orders, and offers its own payment service. Carrefour operates 227 franchise stores in Africa.
