In the first half of 2024, Belgian online shops have recorded 5 % more online transactions and turnover. Almost every Belgian now buys online. Which products are bought the most, and which sectors are lagging behind?
Webshops continue to grow
With both an increase in turnover and transactions compared to last year, the popularity of e-commerce in Belgium clearly continues to grow, a new report by sector federation Becom (charting the e-commerce market in the first half of this year) claims. Never have so many people bought anything online as in the first six months of 2024: almost every adult Belgian is now an online consumer.
The number of Belgian online shops remained more or less stable at 63,867, but they have recorded an increase in turnover. The smallest webshops – the micro segment – are decreasing in number as they climb up into a slightly higher segment. Likewise, small webshops are growing to the medium level. “This is a positive evolution because small and medium webshops account for 61% of the total number of transactions”, Becom director Greet Dekocker says.
