American nervousness after
new attack
Malachy Kavanagh, spokesman for the International Council of Shopping
Centers, told press agency Reuters that the
American government “obviously is going to ramp up security” and that it will enforce stricter standards for American malls. A more public presence of
security personnel and a better collaboration with local law enforcement are
but a few possible new rules.
The Kenyan shopping centre Westgate was the target of the Islamic Al Shabaab
group. The mall had several Israeli stores and proved popular with foreign visitors. That explains why the casualties are
not only from Kenya, but also from the Netherlands, Great Britain, China,
Canada and Ghana. Diplomats
from these last two nations have also been found among the casualties.
Fear that the attack will inspire
others, has pushed the American government into increasing its surveillance of public
transportation and other public areas. Shopping centres are probably the next
area to receive increased attention.
