Kaufland, part of the Schwarz Group that also includes Lidl, wants to become Europe’s leading online marketplace. An expansion to France and Italy is planned for the end of this summer.
140 million potential customers
After earlier launches to Austria and Poland, Kaufland wants to boost its European expansion by setting its sights on France and Italy. With 37 million and 22 million potential customers respectively, these markets would increase the reach of Kaufland’s marketplace to almost 140 million consumers, the group estimates.
In Germany, Kaufland attracts up to 32 million visitors to its marketplace every month. The fastest growing categories last year were Electronics & Computers (+ 24 %) and Garden & DIY (+ 20 %). However, its Gross Merchandise Value only increased by 7.85 % in 2024.
Kaufland wants to distinguish itself as a “European alternative” to Amazon and the Chinese e-commerce platforms. “From Europe, for Europe”, is its motto: “As platform that strictly adheres to European rules, we guarantee our customers security in terms of data and products”, Kaufland states in a press release.
