Retail and wholesale are in the top ten European sectors with labour shortages. What can companies do to find suitable people? The European Union researched the causes – and solutions.
80% lack suitable employees
Although the pressure on the labour market has eased slightly compared to 2023, it is still significantly higher than before the Covid pandemic. Some 80% of EU employers are struggling to recruit workers with the right skills. Currently, one in three workers in the EU have skills mismatched to their jobs: 17% are overqualified and 13% are underqualified.
By 2023, a quarter of EU companies were forced to hire workers without the required skills. A further 18% reported that less than one in five new employees had the necessary skills. This is according to a new report by Eurofound, which warns of far-reaching consequences.
