Not open yet and already too small
Nike’s original plans meant that Ham, in the Belgian province of Limburg, would get a logistics site of 4.5 hectares next to its other facility at Laakdal. The new site would be able to handle 15 million pairs of shoes, ready for distribution across Europe and parts of Asia, but Nike decided yesterday that it would increase the facility’s capacity by 50 % by adding two additional floors to the building.
The Flemish regional government contributes an additional 4.5 million euro, which is 8 % of the total investment of 60 million euro that is required to create the additional floors and an expansion of its Laakdal-based operations. On top of the 500 jobs the basic structure would have added, the addition will now include another few dozen jobs, although it is unclear how many vacancies will be added at this point.
