Alternative payment methods are gaining in importance, but their level of acceptance differs greatly. Dutch shoppers are twice as likely to use self-scanning checkouts compared to their Belgian counterparts, who prefer paying using QR codes.
Shopping without a wallet
Payment preferences are changing rapidly with the emergence of new technologies such as digital wallets, but there are remarkable differences in adaptation by Belgian and Dutch consumers. For example, only 27 % of Belgians use self-scanning checkouts, a number that is more than twice as high (61 %) in the Netherlands. “Buy now, pay later” is also significantly more established among Dutch shoppers.
