In its first transparency report for the European Commission, Temu released some striking figures: it claims to have almost 94 million users in the European Union every month and to have stopped 7.2 million unsafe or banned products.
Germany biggest market
With Temu’s success comes the obligation to release transparency reports within the European Union, as Pinduoduo’s international interface has become a “Very Large Online Platform” (VLOP) under the European Digital Services Act (DSA). Between April and October, Temu had 93.7 million monthly users in the EU, with Germany being the biggest market (16.3 million users).
France is the second largest market with 12 million users, while Italy completes the podium with 10 million – just before Poland (9.6 million) and Spain (9.4 million). The Netherlands are sixth with 4.6 million monthly users, twice as many as in Belgium.
2,500 content moderators
Temu’s first transparency report also paints a picture of how the platform deals with challenges such as product safety, intellectual property, and content management. Some key points from the report are:
Content moderation: the platform combines algorithms with a team of 2,500 moderators (based in Ireland). Automated systems detect banned and high-risk products, while specialised teams handle complex issues such as intellectual property.
Enforcement requests: Temu received 89 reports on illegal content, mostly related to unsafe products (35) and incorrect labelling (42). Germany and France were the most active reporting countries, with 51 and 17 requests respectively.
Own initiatives: the company claims to have stopped 6.3 million possible intellectual property violations and 7.2 million unsafe or banned products on its own initiative.
