Online marketplaces that sell second-hand products are growing 50% faster than regular platforms. These are the findings of a new European ranking of sustainable marketplaces.
A 100 billion euro market
Second-hand selling, or ‘recommerce’, is rapidly gaining ground. CBCommerce’s fourth report on sustainable marketplaces, which tracks online platforms active in Europe on a cross-border scale, reveals a flourishing second-hand landscape driven by marketplaces.
By 2025, second-hand sales are expected to account for 12.6% of total online sales in Europe, more than double the size of the market in 2020 (5.7%). Marketplaces also account for 72.3% of the volume of ‘recommerce’ exchanges. The main players, such as Vinted, TheRealReal, MPB and Back Market, continue to gather strength each year, according to CBCommerce.
