6 % growth in first 8 months
669,395 cars were sold in August in Europe, a 2.1 % growth compared to the year before. July also marked a 5.6 % growth and that has capped of an entire year of growth. That is a record according to ACEA, the European organization for the automotive industry.
During the first 8 months of the year, European car sales grew 6 % to nearly 8.34 million cars. All large car markets grew, like France (+ 1.6 %), Germany (+ 2.6 %) and Great Britain (+ 10.1 %). Austria (- 4.6 %), Belgium (- 0.8 %) and the Netherlands (- 5.4 %). Particularly, the Dutch market is struggling.
Volkswagen is number one
Volkswagen sold the most cars in the January – August period, reaching 1 million cars. Renault came in second with nearly 570,000 cars, while Peugeot was third with nearly 511,000 cars.
At group level, VW Group (which owns Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda) is the undisputed number one with 2,121,492 cars. That’s more than twice the amount number 2 managed, the PSA Group (Peugeot and Citroën), with 914,265 cars. Renault Group (Renault and Dacia) sold 817,562 cars.
