Chinese online giant Alibaba has joined forces with several major brands, including Swarovski, Louis Vuitton and Samsung, in an attempt to curb counterfeit sales.
Fight together
The goal is to bring together the data all parties have gathered, in order to detect people who sell counterfeit faster. Once detected, they will be brought to court, which should deter others from doing something similar in the future. Alibaba says the new system is already doing its job and has eliminated an overwhelming 380 million counterfeit items from its online shops.
“The most powerful weapon against counterfeiting today is data and analytics, and the only way we can win this war is to unite”, Alibaba’s chief platform officer Jessie Zheng said.
Similarly, eBay intends to launch eBay Authentice before the end of the year, allowing buyers and sellers to verify an item (for a price), before possibly buying or selling it.
