In a move to counter Etsy, Amazon has added its Handmade at Amazon platform, which sells hand-made items, to its websites in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.
More than 30,000 items
A year ago, the American online department store launched Handmade at Amazon in its native country, starting with an offer of about 80,000 hand-made items, crafted by about 5,000 artisans. Now, it boasts more than 500,000 items and its number of artisans has almost doubled.
CEO Jeff Bezos must have thought it was time to now conquer the European market, especially as its major competitor Etsy has been active here for quite some time, just like local initiatives like German DaWanda and French, but English-sounding, Alittlemarket.
Handmade at Amazon’s European branch launches with 30,000 items, from jewelry to living accessories, furniture, kitchen items and even “art”. Several dozen items come from Belgian and Dutch artisans.
