Competition with major chains
The distribution center was vacant since late last year, when Tesco decided to leave, but is accommodated with freezers and cooling units, all ready for service. Amazon has also signed a 10-year lease for a distribution center in Bardon (in Leicestershire). Several British media report that Amazon plans to introduce its Amazon Fresh service in September, news that has now gained validity through the deal for both distribution centers.
Amazon Fresh is currently only available in several American locations, like its home base Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. With its UK transfer, Amazon is competing with chains like Tesco, Sainsbury’s and other home delivery services, like Ocado.
