Amazon’s competition has faster growth
According to Internet Retailer, the top 500 of largest European online retailers represented a 155.23 billion dollar (113.76 billion euro) turnover in 2013, 17 % higher than in 2012. Amazon managed the exact same growth and remains Europe’s largest online retailer, while German Otto Group holds on to the second spot, with ‘only’ an 8 % turnover increase. Tesco jumps from 5 to 3 thanks to a 23 % turnover growth.
Group Casino moves up 2 spots, to number 5, thanks to an 86 % online turnover increase, while Zalando enters the top 10 at 9 (coming from 15) thanks to a 53 % turnover increase.
Cross-border
Internet Retailer points out that an increasing number of European retailers benefit from sales abroad, with 27 (out of the 500) online retailers having local websites in 3 or more countries. These specific retailers have grown, on average, over 29 %, which steadily outpaces the list’s average of 17 %.
