Parental permission
A similar case against Apple got settled earlier this year for the amount of 32.5 million dollars (24 million euro), which Apple had to pay consumers whose children had ran up a bill too easily through in-app purchases. Apple has changed its payment process, asking for parental permission before in-app purchases are allowed.
The FTC wants Amazon to mention more clearly when in-app purchases are in play and ask for a password before allowing such transactions. The refund procedure also has to be easier and faster, but Amazon says it does not need to update its app procedures. The company says it already follows the same rules that were given to Apple, like a procedure that gives customers a compensation for when children accidentally purchase items.
No more discounts in France
Amazon can also no longer hand out discounts on books in France and will now also charge a symbolic delivery fee. Both changes are to adhere to new French legislation which outlaws discounts and free delivery for books. The French government hopes to improve the profitability of actual book stores after it had considered Amazon’s approach as unfair competition.
