Carpool service Blablacar wants to engage its users to deliver packages at home. It currently has no plans to actually trial this new service, but it is an idea that is floating around the company’s offices.
No profit for users
“Millions of our users drive between cities and villages”, co-founder Nicolas Brusson told NOS. “They can also deliver packages, letters and other things without any additional costs. The car is driving anyway, so why not grab a guitar from Amsterdam to Brussels, something that would cost you a fortune to do that within 24 hours nowadays.”
Blablacar noticed the service already existed in Russia, where users can book a seat in a car and then bring a package they have to deliver to someone’s home. That is where Blablacar gets its own idea from.
Blablacar users can look for additional passengers through the app or website or they can book a seat with another driver in exchange for fuel compensation. The company is often compared to Uber or AirBnB, with the exception that drives cannot earn money and basically only get to cover their expenses. Blablacar even imposes a maximum fee, one that drivers cannot surpass.
