Ambition: top 3 worldwide
Within 2 months after Carrefour’s charge on Amazon in France, the French distributor is now also invading the Spanish market (including Catalan and Basque languages) with Nolim.es – a reference to Carrefour’s own e-readers, called Nolimbook.
The company wants to offer people an alternative to Amazon.com and Spanish Tagus, a joint venture between department store chain El Corte Inglés and La Casa del Libro, which has been active in the Spanish digital market since 2011.
In 2015, Nolim wants to become part of the three largest players in the Spanish eBook market. To achieve that goal, Carrefour will also target the international market (including South America) and quickly expand its current product range from 30,000 to 200,000 thanks to deals with other large eBook distributors. Some 500 employees were trained to handle the specific demands of the eBook market.
Carrefour’s e-reader will also be promoted with 175 shop-in-shops in its own Spanish hypermarkets. Alongside these hypermarkets, Carrefour also has another 112 Carrefour Markets and 256 Carrefour Express convenience stores in Spain.
