Major price differences
Shipping a 2 kg package in Belgium, Spain or the Netherlands will cost between 6.5 and 8.5 euro. However, if the package is sent across the nation’s borders, then the costs spiral out of control, from 13 to 33 euro.
The European Commission does not think transportation or wage differences account for this discrepancy, but that these costs are the consequence of weak competition and a lack of clarity and supervision.
That is why it wants to propose several ideas early next year to increase openness and improve the supervision on package delivery services. No price regulation will be put in place yet, but a competitive European online market could save the consumer up to 11 billion euro annually.
