Not a marketing stunt
When a Dallas Penn managed to get a hold of a 65 % voucher on Sunday and shared it on Twitter and Instagram, Ralph Lauren’s web shop experienced a true stampede. The problem was aggravated once the voucher found its way to discount sites like Slickdeals.net.
Many believed this to be a marketing stunt, but the company denied such claims: “Yesterday evening, a special promotional employee discount code was shared online without the company’s authorization and has since been deactivated.” Apparently, an employee had given the code to a friend, who in turn gave it to another friend by mail and so forth.
American media report that Ralph Lauren has honored the majority of orders, accepting the 65 % discount, as long as the order was within reasonable boundaries. Purchases like bags of over 1,000 dollars or a 5,700 chandelier were apparently rejected.
Plenty of fans had a wonderful time though as several hundred photographs on social media have proven.
