Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi is set to pay 600 million dollars (530 million euro) in damages to customers who purchased a car that turned out to exhaust more harmful gases than officially stated.
Saved by Nissan
Mitsubishi will use the funds to pay back 625,000 customers for the damages they suffered, with 956 dollars (850 euro) for every customer. The fee should pay back for the additional fuel need and the higher taxes they will be forced to pay.
The eK Wagon, eK Space, Dayz and Dayz Roox models are all part of the fraudulent activity, but possible additional models will be announced soon. Mitsubishi manufactured the Dayz and Dayz Roox models on behalf of Nissan and the fraud came to light when that company performed its own tests to check the car’s emissions.
Once the scandal broke, two of Mitsubishi’s board members resigned and its stock exchange imploded. Nissan saved Mitsubishi when it paid nearly two billion euro to acquire about a third of the Japanese company.
Mitsubishi is not the only Japanese car manufacturer in trouble: the Japanese Ministry of Transportation is currently investigating several Suzuki models as well.
