President Donald Trump has apparently targeted Amazon as his new enemy. He feels the retail giant is taking advantage of the U.S. Postal Service, something he wishes to remedy with a series of new rules and legislation.
‘Delivery boy’
In a series of tweets, Trump said that Amazon has obtained several advantages from the U.S. Postal Service, which resulted in a sizeable loss for the latter. According to Trump, Amazon is using the Postal Service as its personal ‘delivery boy’.
Trump also indicates that Trump has plenty of tax benefits, while other retailers that pay their taxes have to shut down. The president feels that is unfair competition.
The Washington Post
Another thorn in Trump’s side is the fact that Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos, also owns The Washington Post, one of the newspapers the president often lambasts as “fake news”. Bezos says he does not intervene in the newspaper’s content, but that answer does not please Trump.
No measures have been announed thus far, but Trump’s tweets did hammer Amazon’s share 5 % on Monday.
Several White House sources have told American Vanity Fair that Trump wants Amazon to pay the U.S. Postal Service higher delivery fees. Amazon’s contract with the Pentagon, which includes several cloud services worth several billion dollars, may also be cancelled.
