From 2019 onward, Swedish car brand Volvo will only manufacture cars with a hybrid or electric engine, eliminating the traditional models entirely.
Five new models
Between 2019 and 2021, Volvo will launch five new, entirely electric models, including three Volvo models and two Polestar models, its sports car brand. These will all have hybrid cousins, either diesel or gasoline-based or mild hybrids (48 volt). “This announcement is the end of the car with a traditional combustion engine”, CEO Hakan Samuelsson said. “Not a single Volvo will roll off the assembly line without an electric engine in the future.”
Volvo is not the only brand to see the benefits of electric or hybrid car. Consider the Tesla, entrepreneur Elon Musk’s car brand, which has become very popular or even German Volkswagen, which intends to launch 25 new hybrid or electric models between 2025 and 2030. Car manufacturers face increasing pressure to create more environmentally friendly cars, but that is very hard to do with a traditional combustion engine. That helps drive these brands to look for other power sources.
