Compete with Amazon
Walmart does not only want to use drones in a delivery capacity, but also to pick up items from customers and to create an inventory of its warehouses. The company has been extensively trialing drones for a while, but always in-doors. In order to run tests outside, it needs permission from the government.
The department store chain is not the first American company to see a future in drones. Google and Amazon have already considered the possibility of having a drone-powered delivery service and that is also why the American FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) is currently creating new legislation to allow for this type of drone use.
